Recently, as you may have seen advertised in various magazines the
exact same thing was done with cable from the Forth Bridge in
Edinburgh.  The thing is people want to have a bit of nostalgia in
their homes and are prepared to pay handsomely for it.

The Golden Gate Bridge cable in its new ornament form sold over
one million pieces - heaven knows just how many of the Forth
Bridge sections were sold.  Last time I heard about it there were
no more left.  The people who thought of this are now rich.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

historical buildings, churches, etc., are all collectable items
and saleable too - with the right imagination.

SELLING THE SOIL

The Americans call soil 'dirt'.  And 'dirt' in the USA is another
best seller.  Sounds crazy?  Well you bought this guide because
you want an original 'unique' business and that's what I'm going
to give you.

Do you remember the book 'Roots'?  It started a scramble to check
up on who your ancestors are.  People are now very interested in
tracing family roots.  People also want to have something which
they can say IS part of their 'home' country.

So some enterprising people in the States came up with the idea of
canning soil or 'dirt' from different countries and selling it to
those who want a constant reminder of their homeland.

This has made fortunes for people and could do the same for you
over here in good old Britain.

SELLING HERITAGE IN A TIN

It doesn't have to be a tin.  Even a well presented plastic tub
with 'home ground' will do.  You put a label on the tub declaring
actual soil from a part of the country and advertise in magazines
where there are lots of British immigrants.

THINK OF THE POTENTIAL

People in America who long for a bit of their home ground.  Irish,

THE ULTIMATE PET ROCK - OVER 4,000,000 SOLD IN FOUR MONTHS

Back to pet rocks again and quite right.  These are items of
novelty value only which have not yet taken on it Britain -
possibly because no one has yet come up with the right type of
marketing procedure.  So here's an opportunity for you to make
your pile.

A very imaginative man in the USA called Gary Dahl created an idea
for a best selling 'pet rock' which sold over four million items
within the first four months.

He had a plastic manufacturer make tiny cages like miniature bird
cages and inside was a gold plated screw.  Yes, just an ordinary
wood screw which was gold plated.  Gold plating is quite
inexpensive by the way, and you can now get your own kits to do
this.

With this little gold plated screw he had a joke book as the thing
was intended to sell on a 'joke' basis.

It worked.  And how!  He at first tested the idea by walking into
an office and saying to the receptionist "I'd like to give you a
screw!"  Can you imagine the result.  Joyous laughter abounded and
he then presented the little gold plated screw in it's tiny cage.

Word spread and before long he was collecting orders for this
novelty like wildfire.  He arranged for a company to manufacture
in quantity the unusual idea and had another company distribute
and market the items for him.

The big USA department store Neiman Marcus even had a contract
placed to buy solid gold screws on a necklace!

Just another idea which made someone rich.  Now you think on the
same lines and come up with a best seller.

OTHER PET ROCK IDEAS

A huge American mail order company came up with a brilliant idea
some years ago.  They purchased U.S. currency which had been
'shredded' by the government and put approx. $50,000 worth of this
'shredded' currency into plastic boxes or containers and sold
therefor around $6.  These were sold with a certificate claiming
the notes were authentic and the outside of the box had a 'fake'
note of a œ100 bill.

Something similar could be done in this country and you could for
example advertise "œ10,000 worth of cash for just œ10!"  Think of
the response you would have for your gimmick!

BOXES OF JUNK

The same company also produced a 'pet rock' which was simple
little printed boxes full of JUNK.  This as sold with a comical
note enclosed and contained silly little things like a rubber
band, paperclip, used postage stamps, a balloon and other useless
items.  They sold this for $5 and it turned out to be a hilarious
party gift and also perhaps a gift to send someone you don't care
for very much!

THE FAMOUS PET WORMS

You may have heard of these.  Two part time 'worm farmers' sold
little plastic boxes of live pet worms with titles such as
Executive Worms and Unemployed Worms.  This took off very well in
the States and although we have had copies of their famous Ant
Farms over here, I have not yet come across any of the worm
gimmicks.

This is definitely something to think about.  It makes a great
party piece to talk about sitting on the mantelpiece.




SECTION TWO:

OTHER UNUSUAL IDEAS
RECORDING SPEECHES AT CONVENTIONS ETC

A young man called Gregory Stavish in California has come up with
a great business idea which has made him quite a bundle - $300,000
of a bundle.

He goes to conventions, club events, commerce meetings etc., and
armed with his portable tape recorder, records the speeches of the
main speakers.

PEOPLE LIKE TO LISTEN TO THEIR OWN VOICE

It's true.  Just think how many people who have made speeches at
events would like to have a copy for nostalgia.

One the speech is made it's gone forever.  Lost as just a memory. 
So it's no wonder this young man has made a fortune out of
recording other peoples speeches.

SELL TO EVERYONE AT CONVENTIONS

Gregory however, just does not sell his tapes to the speaker.  He
goes to conventions and gets the list of all the people in the
audience and sells these people tapes of their favourite speaker.

He has these easily reproduced for 50 cents each and sells them
for up to $10.  There is no reason why this should not work in
this country.  People here are more information crazy than ever
before.

WHY LET IT STOP THERE?

Yes, why just stop at business conventions etc., just look at
the market for WEDDINGS!  How many people take video recordings of
the ceremony and people outside the church but stop filming when
at the reception.

Just think of what a tape recording of the happy day speeches
would mean to the happy couple.  AND THE PROFIT!

AN EMPLOYMENT AGENCY FOR GRANDMOTHERS

In Britain recently a number of enterprising people have set up an
employment agency for GRANNIES.  This is not a new idea as the USA
has had these agencies for some time now.

Just think.  When a woman reaches 50 or 60 she may be a little
bored and want to start a 'second' lifestyle.

The same obviously can apply to grandfathers but this type of
business copes for the lady who is left at home or has a rather

PUTTING HOUSES ON TAPE

Here's another idea from America which has recently been put into
operation here.  Although the market is still wide open you should
get in quick!
SELLING HOUSES USING VIDEOTAPE

A company in Minnesota has a lucrative market in selling houses by
video tape.  They also take a film of your contents and store this
for insurance reasons.

Think about this one.  How many people who are in the market for a
new home really have enough details about their purchase?  How
much easier for them to look through video tapes of the homes on
offer.

PUTTING HOUSES ON TAPE

Here's another idea from America which has recently been put into
operation here.  Although the market is still wide open you should

money to the billboard owners, then why not have MOBILE billboards
- yes, cars.  He started "Beetleboards of America" using people
who owned Volkswagen Beetles to advertise on.  He now has over 500
'Beetlebugs' driving around with peoples advertising messages on
them.

A national well known advertiser can pay as much as $2000 per year
per car for this service and I see no reason why this can't be
copied here.

for a percentage of the ticket price.  Around 20% will give you

l.A., etc with shop keepers paying $100 or so for a $1000 dress
and re-selling it for around $500.  There are no shortage of

It is the gimmick value of being able to wear something previously
worn by a famous star.  People love to turn up at parties saying
this outfit or suit was previously owned by such-and-such!

WHERE TO BUY STARTS' CLOTHES

In Britain you could try places like the wardrobe departments of
the television studios and film sets.  You could also write to all
the British celebrities and state your business asking whether
they would like to sell any of their old or previously worn
clothes.

Their expenditure on clothing must be enormous and I am sure even
with their salaries they would welcome some money back for used
items.

NOT JUST CLOTHES

You could also ask to buy jewellery or smaller items such as
scarves, hats, etc.

There is a ready market to sell these items.  You just need to get
the contacts to buy these.  Once you have purchased from such
stars and go about your business in a reasonable discreet way, not
making a fuss to press or TV about it, you should have no
difficulty in obtaining regular supplies which you could then turn
into a really profitable home business.

Even just selling one item of clothing (a dress or suit) would
give you at least œ200 profit.  Sell a few of these per week and
you've got a good income.

ADVERTISING THESE

Small classified advertisements in monthly fashion mags, the
glossies, will being in plenty of enquiries and you could operate
by mail order by sending 'polaroid' photos of what you have in
stock together with sizes etc.

Buy expensive designer clothes from socialites who rarely wear

In Los Angeles I have heard of a successful business which has
been going for nearly 30 years and although duplicated many times
it has as far as I know never been operated in this country with
the success it has in the USA.

The idea is swapping gifts which are unwanted and is especially
booming around the Christmas season.  However with people
receiving many unwanted gifts all year round from birthdays,
weddings, etc,. it has great potential throughout the year.

What happens is this.  You organise either from your house or a
rented shop a 'Gift Exchange'.  People bring in their brand new
undamaged and unwanted gifts and they receive a token for up to
three quarters of that gift value.

They then can choose something else from the range of other
peoples 'gifts' in your stock to that value.  If it is more than
the coupon 'token' value they then pay the difference.

You also sell gifts outright for cash at a price below the shop
value but above he 'token' value given to your exchange customer. 
So you have two ways of making money out of this business.

People could also sell their unwanted gifts to you for cash should
they need the money and receive say half the 'normal' price for
the gift.  You then sell it for three quarters the shop price and
make a healthy profit.

Obviously to make this work you will need a considerable amount of
stock but since you do not need any outlay for this and the
customer pays nothing 'up front' it should be no problem to soon
acquire a substantial selection.

A FACE LIFT IN A JAR

Recently a British organisation introduced a new product with
tremendous potential.  It's called "Face-Lift-In-A-Jar" and is
claimed to make 90% of your wrinkles disappear for up to 72 hours.

The company claim it is from a 'Hollywood Secret Formula' and
certainly the testimonials are impressive and the product seems to
have taken off, although the market must be absolutely huge for
such a product enabling YOU to still introduce it in your area or
even advertise nationally.

It is made from natural ingredients and is claimed to be a skin
treatment as well.

HUGE MARKET

Think of the possibilities for such a product.  Most women (men
too) who dread looking older are prospects.  They advertise
'wrinkle lines disappear making you look years younger'.  I have
not tried this product but must say I'm very impressed by all the
appraisals which I believe to be genuine as the marketing
organisation is one of the best in this country.

INTERNATIONAL PRODUCT

This product has been advertised in the United States, Canada,
Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, all before being offered on the
home market here.

It seems like a great opportunity for those who are interested in
helping people improve their looks.

Here's an idea stemming from the United States which could be a
winner in this country.  Personalised bottles of perfume are a

without labels so you can sell these under your own brand name and
have no price restrictions dictated by major perfumeries.

These can however be used with a bit of imagination or sold as

personalised with a message and the name of the loved one printed
beneath.

All this is wrapped in expensive gift paper over an exquisite box
and sent direct to the receiver.

HUGE PROFITS TO BE MADE

You can charge very high prices for such a service as it is unique
and as I said a 'one-off'.

Advertise in Sunday newspapers and the better quality glossy
magazines and you should find plenty of customers all year round. 
Not just Christmas and Valentines days but for birthdays,
anniversaries, Christenings, etc., in fact many occasions when
that little 'something special' is required to make the event just
that.

without labels in trade magazines.

Start with classified advertising and as your business grows into
small display ads in the publications most suited.

TELLING PEOPLE OFF BY TELEPHONE

Another idea from the USA which hasn't caught on here as yet is a
business started by a woman in America which sprouted from hearing
her friends say they would like to give their boss 'a right piece
of my mind' but found they just couldn't do it themselves.

She organised a small business to do just that.  Not only telling
off bosses but anyone who has aggravated someone to an extent he
or she is furious and wants to get their own back.

Sounds crazy doesn't it but this woman makes $5 per phone call

not use obscene language or you will be in trouble.

Neo_Tech! and all that discovery

FRANK WALLACE AND HIS 'NEO-TECH' DISCOVERY

Some time ago I purchased a large publication consisting of
'special information packages' by a Frank R. Wallace of I. & O. 
Publishing Company which has offices throughout the world.

offers is a huge 'telephone directory' size manual half of which
is full of testimonials received from clients worldwide.  The
price of $82 does not seem to put people off ordering in vast
numbers.  So what has he done that is so unusual?

Obviously I cannot divulge the contents of the package as that
would be an infringement of his copyright.  But I can tell you
this.  Virtually any intelligent man or woman could think up
something like this and make it a best seller.

It is the way he advertises this package which makes people want
to buy.  The information is very good although on reading it
several times I realise this is a combination of commonsense
together with a fairly new theme on looking out for the everyday
'cheaters' in society and taking steps to avoid being 'controlled'
by these people.

He makes claims that nothing as profitable has been published
before.  Whether after reading 'Neo-Tech' you would agree or not
is at your discretion.  Many people obviously think so from his
testimonials and there are a lot of these.

It is worthwhile reading this package to see if you or possibly a
team of people could come up with something as 'unique' and sell

LOTS OF IDEAS FOR PACKAGES LIKE THIS

If you think you would like to write and market a 'package'
similar to the one explained here then there is a very good manual
out which contains methods of doing something like this.

It is called "Mail Order for the 1990s" and contains useful advice
on the subject.

Although this is one of the most lucrative of the ideas mentioned
here it also needs a fair amount of capital to set up on such a
grand scale as Dr. Wallace has done.

You could however start very small using normal mail order
start-up technique and expand from there.
