Interior
decorating is a most flexible, diversified field and
lucrative
business for either a man or woman to engage in.
It
is flexible in that it can be operated on a full time, part
time,
even a temporary basis; it is diversified because you can
include
all its many phases in your business or limit yourself to
only
one aspect of it; and lucrative because fees for such
consultation
and services run very high, and there is every
opportunity
to make additional profit on furnishings and fabrics
used
on the job!
I'm
Mrs Helena Ingoldstone, living on the South Coast, and I work
at
interior decorating only in the summertime whilst my husband is
abroad
at conferences, etc.
Although
I specialise in early Tudor decoration and antiques,
there
is no reason for you to need to specialise, particularly in
the
early stages.
Incidentally,
I happily conduct the business from my own home. I
really
hadn't thought of interior decoration as a means of earning
an
extra livelihood until my dear son passed away in the Spring of
88,
leaving me very alone while my husband was away.
I
had actually attended adult education classes in interior
decorating
previously, but only with casual interest, so now I
enrolled
in more advanced courses which I pursued with enormous
vigour
- and with an eye to starting my own business as soon as
possible!
I
took particular note of the fact that the kitchen and bathroom
are
the two rooms that most people neglect, yet they are the ones
that
potential buyers most remember!
One
has earned a good living from that small piece of knowledge.
I
learned all about such things as colour, lighting, blueprint
reading,
proportion, mood, room traffic flow, furniture
arrangement,
period furnishings, woods, fabrics, patterns,
textures,
etc.
I
also learned the rudiments of curtain making (though I
personally
like the newer French 'rouched' style curtains), along
with
a small amount of upholstery work enabling one to estimate
material
measurements accurately.
Ultimately
I felt qualified to decorate almost any room so that it
would
be considered what is known locally as 'charming'.
This
is the goal of interior decoration which when reached, will
provide
an appealing combination of colours, a comfortable
arrangement
of compatible furnishings, plus details and
accessories,
which reflect a skillful and personal touch.
As
is to often true, one job well done led to another task as talk
of
my ability spread.
